How to Decorate with Old Windows

Small, big or medium it’s hard to pass up an interesting old window. Each one unique and with a story to tell. Many of these windows taken from old buildings that once held so much life. I wish each one could tell it’s story.

My mom was really the forerunner when it came to decorating with windows.  She put a old window in our house way before it became trendy.  That beautiful old window is still hanging up in her dining room.  And if she ever got rid of it (I know she never will) I would snatch that window up in a hot second!

I’m always on the look out for stunning well-priced old windows. As I mentioned, each window is so unique and fascinating. And you can decorate with old windows in so many ways. Not only that but there’s a growing trend of using old windows to make furniture.  Really the possibilities are endless.

But today’s blog is all about how to decorate with old windows. I had no clue what to do with the first window I  bought. I loved it but it was heavy and oddly shaped.  I had no clue how I was going to hang it up… where I was going to put it and how it would work with the rest of my decor.

The first step was trying to figure out how to hang it up. 99 percent of the windows I’ve found in old antique stores don’t have any hanging attachments on them.  You have to put them on yourself.  But no fears! Hobby Lobby has just what you need.  Near their framing department you can get a pack of ring holders and frame backs.

Once you attach your hangers to the window I like to use I-hooks to then attach the window to the wall (the J-shaped hangers above). These you can also find at Hobby Lobby.

Ok, back to decorating.  The window I found was a old white framed window. Once I hung it up I knew it needed something else to make it pop. It just didn’t stand out.  So I paired it with a wreath I  found at a craft fair.  Perfect!

Wreaths are always a perfect add on to a beautiful window.

Here’s another example of a beautiful window that my mother-in-law found that looks great with a wreath.

I love the worn blue paint on this window.  It really could have stood on it’s own but I wanted to incorporate some yellow on the wall to match with the rest of the yellow decor I have around the room. Plus the wreath helps it to stand out more.

Next, coupling multiply windows of different colors and shapes is a great way to use your windows.

My husband and I love stained glass windows and they’re all over my house.  I thought a stained glass window would be a perfect add to the blue window.

Always add a couple more decorative items to pull the look off.

I don’t like straight lines, so when I decorate nothing is in a straight line. I couple things of similar colors and looks and anchor them around the main piece (the blue window).

Now, what about windows that are too big to hang?  I found a lovely window that was just too big and heavy to hang up at our house, but I still wanted to use it.  So, I came up with a clever solution.  I put the window into a corner with  some lovely decor items.

What about small windows? I found a unique small window at our local antique store.

Again,  it needs some pop, something to make it stand out more and match the rest of my decor.

I found this beautiful floral wreath at a shop in town and then added the yellow flowers myself to give it more color.  To me it kind of looks like a 3D frame!

I hope this inspires you to go out and find that unique item to add to your home!
